Italian wine bars surprised Londoners – Discovering Italian wines around London – Made in Italy with Love
Wine drinking in London is meant to be fun, not an extended lecture. And Italian wine drinking, like any upstanding pastime, requires a little practice. Fortunately, London is pleasingly rammed with decent bars all honouring the grape’s greatest achievement “a moth turning into a butterfly has nothing on this humble fruit transforming into a bottle of Chianti” The city is even producing its own stuff, as Gavin Monery from London Cru explains in the video below.
The wine bars in London are truly the best place to unwind after a long working day, where you can can gather together with friends and spend the evening relaxing with a refreshing glass of vino and great conversation. But with so many wine bars lurking in every corner of the city, it’s hard to pick out the best ones. Nothing beats a good glass of wine, does it? Although you can get wine in almost every bar in London, there’s just something so pleasing about the atmosphere, selection and in-depth knowledge of a good wine bar. We did the hard work for you and visited some of the best ones in the city, from pop-up places that now have a permanent fixture to those that are iconic in London.
Here are London’s best Italian wine bars for when you next fancy a tipple…
Enoteca Super Tuscan, 8A Artillery Passage, London E1 7LJ, phone number 02072478717; the Super Tuscan movement began in the late 1960s when a few forward thinking wine makers in the Chianti Italian region (Tuscany) broke with tradition to create wines that did not conform to the strict regulations of the time by using unauthorised grape varieties and/or non-traditional oak barrels for aging. Just as the Super Tuscans sought to offer something different, here you find the more unusual and finer wines and ingredients that Italy has to offer together with the best of the old favourites. We believe that good Italian food means quality ingredients cooked with minimum fuss to bring out maximum flavour and as such we have spent time seeking out the best suppliers. The resulting wines attracted international attention and are considered to be some of the finest wines produced in Italy;
Vino and Vino, 16 West Smithfield, London EC1A 9HY, phone numbers 020 7248 1510, offers a carefully selected wine list of all Italian regions with excellent relationship between quality and price.
With over 60 wine labels this is the best Italy has to offer without compromising on good value for money.
In the bars shop are selected wines choosing among several labels for the same grapes in order to provide our customers with the best representation of each and every region of Italy. Vino and Vino offers a wide range of sparkling, white, red and sweet wines. From North to South you can find the great sophistication and elegance of Venice canals in Veneto’s wines (Prosecco, Soave, Amarone, Valpolicella Ripasso); the austerity and persistency of Turin, first Italian capital, in Piemonte’s wines (Gavi di Gavi, Roero Arneis, Dolcetto, Barbera, Nebbiolo, Barolo, Barbaresco); the excellence and the genius of Leonardo da Vinci, Galileo and Macchiavelli in Toscana’s wines (Chianti, Morellino di Scansano, Brunelllo, Tignanello e Sassicaia); the green hearth of Umbria as the birthplace of Italy’s Patron Saint San Francesco di Assisi in the award winning white wine Cervaro della Sala the warmth and passion of Naples in wines from Campania (Falanghina, Greco di tufo and Aglianico), the region of mozzarella and “o sole mio“.
Not to forget the Sicilian wines (Haral and Nero D’Avola) which reflects the richness and the variety, achieved through a history of contact with different cultures, of this island in the hearth of the Mediterranean Sea.
